Camel Pose: Allowing Vulnerability

Vulnerability can be scary, but also freeing.

Camel pose (Ustrasana) is a heart opener that allows us to be vulnerable. It also helps us reach an approachableness to ourselves.

It is freeing.

Backbends require a faith to lean back into the unknown. Camel pose is one of the most embracing. We must extend backwards and trust we have our own backs.

This posture also requires great strength. When our base and legs are strong, our spine has more flexibility to reach backwards.

By stretching and revealing the front of our body, we expose our whole being. We do not have to curl and cower, ashamed of our bodies.

Open your heart and yourself.

Instructions:

To do Camel pose, begin on your knees, hips distance apart.

Rest your hands on your lower back and pull your tailbone to the floor.

Lean back with your chin tucked toward your chest. You can stay here.

If you are comfortable, you can reach back and hold onto your heels. You can also tuck your toes to give you more elevation or place a block on the outsides of your feet.

Keep your thighs perpendicular to the floor with your hips directly over your knees. Lift up through your pelvis, keeping your lower spine long. Turn your arms outward without squeezing your shoulder blades. Keep your head in a neutral position or let it drop back without straining your neck.

Hold for 30-60 seconds.

To release, bring your hands to your lower back. Inhale and lead with your heart. Lift your torso and push your hips down into the floor. Your head will be the last to come up.

Rest on your knees or in child’s pose.

Camel pose (Ustrasana) can bring up great emotions. Let these emotions come, they are communicating something about yourself.

Breathe steadily as you observe what comes up without judgment.

When you are ready, take a deep breath in and let go of those emotions with a huffed exhale through the mouth.

You are free.

Enjoy your strength and freedom. Your body is amazing and expansive. You are embracing your vulnerability and your authentic self.
